On 15th of November 2017 Bulgaria celebrated the International Day of Geographic Information Systems. The event was organized by ESRI Bulgaria with the official partnership and support of 30 organizations, as SCGIS Chapter Bulgaria was one of the official partners of the prestigious GIS forum.
Traditionally, during the event a conference was held, where leading Bulgarian and international experts presented world trends, successful practices and projects in the field of geographic information technologies. The conference attendees had the opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas with colleagues from different organizations and to find products and solutions to help them work faster, easier and more efficiently.
Geographic information systems are becoming increasingly widespread in all aspects of modern society. Powerful GIS tools, combined with easy-to-understand maps and rich spatial analysis capabilities, help experts from different fields to achieve more sustainable and transparent governance, more effective collaboration and informed decision making. Spatial contexts, analyzes and maps are essential in many areas such as ecology, security, spatial planning and development, engineering infrastructure, education and many others.
Within GIS Day 2017 was held the traditional map competition “The power of Maps” and the Space Research and Technology Institute at BAS, together with SCGIS Chapter Bulgaria are winner for “Best cartographic representation” with the map “Global Land Cover Products for Conservation”.
