“SPACE SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGIES AND THEIR ROLE IN THE BULGARIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL EDUCATION”

On 3^rd November 2017 a Round Table on topic „Space Sciences and Technologies and Their Role in Bulgarian Secondary Education” was organized under the Space School Educational Initiative. The event was organized on the occasion of 60^th anniversary from the launch of the first artificial satellite of the Earth – Sputnik-1 on 4 of October 1957. The round table was held at the Russian Culture and Information Center in Sofia, as a part of the Thirteenth international Scientific Conference “Space, Ecology, Safety” – SES 2017. Organizers of the event are Space Research and Technology Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (SRTI-BAS), Society for Conservation GIS (SCGIS) Chapter Bulgaria and Bulgarian Astronautical Society.

The event provided an opportunity for teachers, students and scientists to share their opinions, views and ideas regarding the possibilities of implementing, role and place of the modern space sciences and technologies in the formal, non-formal and informal education in Bulgarian Secondary Schools.

The event was supported by the State Space Corporation ROSCOSMOS with a greeting address towards the Bulgarian students, teachers and scientists on the behalf of the name of the Executive Director for Communications of ROSCOSMOS, Igor Burenkov, presented at the beginning of the event. The event popularize the Bulgarian educational initiative “Space School” and the European program for Earth Observation Copernicus within Copernicus Academy, part of Copernicus User Uptake Activities.

The event was attended by students and teachers from the National High School of Mathematics and Sciences “Acad. L. Chakalov” and 3 Secondary School “Marin Drinov”, state expert Emil Komatichev, senior experts Jenya Pavlova and Petya Piperkova from the Ministry of Economy, senior expert Kamen Radev from Regional Department of Education Sofia-City, Corr. Mem. DSc. Petar Getsov, Director of the SRTI-BAS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marian Varbanov, Director of Department Geography at the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aleksey Stoev, Director of the Branch of SRTI-BAS at Stara Zagora and member of Board of BAS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Penka Stoeva – Branch of SRTI-BAS at Stara Zagora, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Plamen Angelov from SRTI-BAS and Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Bulgarian Astronautical Society, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tanya Ivanova, member of the Board of the Bulgarian Astronautical Society, Udrivolf Pica, Copernicus Support Office, Belgium, consultant in SpaceTec Partners project manager of “Next Generation Copernicus User Requirements”, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lachezar Filchev, representative of SRTI-BAS for Copernicus Academy and scientists from SRTI-BAS. Organizers and moderators of the event were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vanya Stamenova and Chief Assist. Prof. Dr. Stefan Stamenov from the Department of Remote Sensing and GIS at the SRTI-BAS, members of SCGIS Chapter Bulgaria and Bulgarian Astronautical Society.
