Educational Workshop for students in Vidin

EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP WITH DISCUSSION „MODERN TECHNOLOGIES FOR EARTH OBSERVATION AND THEIR ROLE IN EDUCATION“

9-10 October 2017, Vidin town

An educational workshop with discussion entitled “Modern technologies for Earth Observation and Their Role in Education” was held in Vidin town, Bulgaria on 9th and 10th of October 2017. The event was organized as a part of the Space School Educational Initiative on the occasion of the celebration of the World Space Week (4-10 October 2017). The event was organized by the Space Research and Technology Institute – BAS, Society for Conservation GIS (SCGIS) Chapter Bulgaria, Bulgarian Astronautical Society and ESRI Bulgaria. Hosts of the event were 5th Primary School “Ivan Vazov” on 9th of October and the Vocational High School „Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov“ on 10th of October.

The educational workshop aimed to extend the knowledge about Earth observation and geographic information systems (GIS) and to provide information about the new technologies, their capabilities and their application in the education of students and teachers. Nowadays, Earth observation technologies and GIS are widely used in many sciences, in business and in many areas of everyday life. But although they are linked to many school subjects, their presence in the curriculum is still slightly developed or absent.

During the event were presented two lectures in each of the schools according to the workshop program with authors Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vanya Stamenova and Chief Assist. Prof. Dr. Stefan Stamenov.

Speaker at the event was Dr. Vanya Stamenova from the Space Research and Technology Institute – BAS. After the lectures, a discussion with the attending students, teachers and guests were held on the presented topics. The expert in geography, Mr. Vladko Valchev, from the Regional Inspectorate on Education in Vidin attended the workshop at the Vocational High School „Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov“.
